Mockingbird at the Fountain - this is the first one I have seen in my neighborhood. Judith tells me that this is NOT a mockingbird...here is what she says: Judy--I just want to throw in my impressions--I think you have something that I would get much more excited about seeing in the yard than a Mockingbird. I think this is a Townsend's Solitaire. I'm saying this based on the prominent eye ring and the size and shape of the bill. And, for a long time birder it just look "more like a thrush" than a Mockingbird. They both have mostly gray feathers and white in the tail. The mockingbird has a longer, sharper bill, white wingbars, and a yellow eye. They are similar in lots of ways, but my money is on the Solitaire. This is mostly a high elevation bird, but they sometimes come down lower in winter. (For me, a much better bird than a (here) more common Mockingbird.)
