Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

  • These three baby marmots are surveying their domain. I had been watching and photographing the marmots for about an hour and they seemed quite comfortable and able to ignore me completely. When I first arrived, an adult marmot issued a warning alert for quite a bit. The warning is a very high pitched and penetrating squeaking sound. The main marmot colony is located in a lot of large boulders that were dumped near the bridge to support the soil along the roadbed. But, they have expanded beyond that into the meadow below, where there are marmot tunnels every few feet. The colony is quite close to the Arapaho Bay campground where we were camped. This is near Granby Lake in Colorado. I had never seen a marmot in real life before and I found them quite interesting. View the detail on the three baby marmots in the largest sizes. Golly, I'm amazed by the response to my daily yesterday of the sun shining through holes in the clouds. A number of you indicated that you, too, are constantly jumping out of your cars to take photos. I was just really lucky to be out and about so that I saw those rays as they came through the clouds. Thanks, folks, for taking the time to comment on the shot.
  • A violet green swallow. View the detail of this swallow in the largest sizes. These little birds are very difficult to capture, as they rarely perch like this. They are almost always on the wing and move extremely rapidly. They had nests made of mud that were located under the ledge of a nearby bridge. I staked the area out for a long time and took many photos, but few were very sharp. This is one of the best. Thanks for all the nice remarks on my hairy spider. Unfortunately, I haven't figured out is specific species. Happy Mondy, everyone, and welcome back to Dave Dedman!
  • Hummers Having a Confrontation - taken during our camping trip to Arapaho Bay Campground near Granby Lake, Colorado. The detail is better seen in the largest sizes. The whole time we were there, the hummers had confrontations and fights over the feeder. A number of times one hummer would get another hummer down on the ground and sort of pin it there, buzzing around it. I actually have pictures where a hummer has a feather on its beak from hitting another hummer in the air fights. Very funny and so much personality! Hope you have a good day. Thanks to those who took the time to comment on my fly macro.
  • Woman painting with watercolors at the Denver Botanical Garden. Thanks for all your kind comments on my swallow picture. Have a great day!
  • Pink poppies with the light shining through the petals. View the very nice detail on this shot in the largest sizes. Thanks for all the comments on my psychedelic fish. It was a fun one to process. The week is flying by. Hope everyone has a good day!
  • If You Don't Like Garlic, Go Home - We saw this restaurant with its rather funny sign while driving through Denver to go to the Botanical Gardens. It made us laugh, so maybe it will give you a chuckle, as well. Hope your day is fine!
  • A baby robin, found in the grass, that seems too small to be out of the nest, as its feathers are just beginning to grow in; view the detail in the largest sizes. We found it in the grass at my daughter's house. Just that morning, they had found feathers and some flesh below a robin's nest in one of their trees. They thought all the babies had been killed, but this little guy appeared to have escaped. Heather decided to put him back in the nest. A few minutes later we saw the mother robin shepherding another of the baby birds out of the street. So, perhaps, she wanted them out of the nest. Anyway, she found our little guy and he was back on the ground a bit later. There isn't a lot of cover in Heather's neighborhood, so she's pretty worried about the baby birds. Thanks for the nice comments on my diner shot. I was pleased with the way it turned out. We're heading up to the Denver Botanical Garden later today. I hope to get a lot of good shots. Hope you all have a nice day.
  • Peony bud with ant - I've tried many times to photograph ants and have had little success. I think it is because their bodies are mostly very shiny....they reflect the light so much. Anyway, this is the best I've ever done with an ant and I like the bud, as well. Hope you like it, too. Be sure to look at it in the largest sizes to see the detail. We're still in our every day some rain must fall pattern, but since we normally are very dry, we really cannot complain. Hope everyone has a good start to the week!
  • Reflections in a Chrome Wheel - While waiting for a new windshield to be installed in our little RV, I took a bunch of shots of wheels and car grills at the store next door. I played around with these shots tonight and this is one of the results. I put the rest of the shots in my "Reflections" gallery (under the category of "Other") if you are interested in seeing the others. Thanks for your responses to my hummingbird shot today. I was surprised that it was so well received, since it wasn't really what I had been hoping to capture. However, those little birds are so loaded with personality, it is hard not to warm to them.
  • Chrome wheels on a chrome rack. Not a very interesting story. I was just killing time at a wheel store while we waited to get the windshield replaced on our little RV. However, I did think this turned out pretty well. It has been a long, but rewarding day. I got lots of nice shots at the Denver Botanical Garden but it is going to take a while to get them processed. Hope you all had a good day.
  • View of Pike's Peak from an older motel in Colorado Springs. Hope everyone had a good weekend. We had a good time camping. We came home via the Trailridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park. Wow, what a road. You feel like you are driving at the top of the world. Gorgeous scenery but pretty scary drive.
  • View the detail of this dandelion seedhead in the largest sizes. I'm posting this very late on Sunday, as we just returned from camping.
  • A closeup of a fly; view the detail in the largest sizes. This fella was crawling on my pant's leg. Thanks for all the comments on my motel sign/pike's peak shot. I'm still processing the shots from the Rocky Mt. National Park drive. Hopefully, I'll have some of them up tomorrow.
  • The proud owner of this little guy --- the mistress of a bed and breakfast in Crede, Colorado --- held this fella up for me to capture his picture. He was just adorable. Thanks for all the comments on my great balls of fire. Now, I'm not sure which one I will enter in the challenge. I did not get to reshoot the bubble today because it was too windy. Hopefully, conditions will be better tomorrow.
  • A baby robin perched on a garden statue of an owl. View the detail in the largest sizes. I was wandering in the lovely little town of Creede, Colorado, when I saw four baby robins that were out of the nest but not yet really able to fly well, as their feathers were not completely grown out. They were hopping around in a flower bed and I managed to get several photos of them.
  • A CocaCola van, photographed at a filling station. Thanks to all of you who commented on my baby robin on the owl statue. Happy Father's Day to all you dads!
  • Didn't really have anything I liked for today, so decided to use this older shot. It is the inside of an old diner kitchen...not used anymore for its original purpose.<br />

Thanks so much for all your comments on my coke bottle shot! It is amazing to me how supportive and generous the members of this community are! I was thinking today that if I had not joined this community over three years ago and looked at thousands and thousands of images here, the quality of my photographs probably would hardly have improved at all! I've learned so much from all of you!
  • Trivial Pursuit Questions For Lunch - These three kids are my grandchildren. We had been camping and stopped for lunch in the TicToc Diner in Lake City, Colorado. The kids quizzed one another on Trivial Pursuit questions during their lunch. This is actually one of our family's favorite activities...we don't actually play the game with the game board...we just ask the questions and attempt to answer them. We're off on another camping weekend. This time, we're going to Granby Lake, so I'll miss a couple of days of posting and commenting. Have a great weekend, everyone, and I'll catch up when I get back on Sunday.
  • Inside the TicToc Diner - The TicToc Diner in Lake City, CO, is one of only a few surviving diners called Valentine Diners, which were ordered from a catalog. Today was the day when I could have gotten the shot of a lifetime, but didn't. After our father's day breakfast at I-Hop, we decided to take a drive over to the Woodland Park area in our old restored 1975 Porsche 911. Apparently, everyone else in Colorado Springs had the same idea because traffic was incredibly heavy, although moving along at a fast clip. We're tooling along at about sixty miles an hour and I have my camera in my hand, when out of the corner of my eye I see these big brown shapes. I swivel my head to look and realize I'm looking at two large brown bears....eating on grass or some other plant. They looked incredibly cute and rolly polly. There was no shoulder on which to stop and the traffic was so thick that it was impossible to stop. I was sick about it. By the time we got back around, they were gone. Oh, well, c'est la vie!
