1. Daily shots for the dailies forum on Dgrin

Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

I was lying on on the ground, about four feet from the edge of the tracks, waiting for the train to come. I took this shot as it approached. I was lucky, since there were such lovely clouds in the background. This was taken with my fisheye lens, but at this distance, there is not much distortion at all.

Thanks for all the nice comments on the great dane sticking its head out of the car. I was so lucky to get that one. Of course, it does help that my camera has been permanently attached to the end of my arm! Ha! I'm posting early because we are getting up really early to go to the balloon festival. Hope they fly!

  • I snapped this from our moving car. I find it interesting and confusing. The old buildings look quite derelict, while some of the green tractors don't look in bad shape, The American flag is also a theme here. If you look closely in the largest sizes, you'll see quite a number of them. It is the kind of place that makes me wonder...hmmm...

Well, I'm about done in. I'm going to post and hit the sack. Hope everyone enjoys their day, and, if you cannot, at least "hangs in there."
  • Still Life with Apples, Pear and Coke Bottle - I had not planned to take still life shots, but when I saw the light from the RV window hitting the fruit, I spent a bit of time taking pictures of it. I had brought the flowers in the coke bottle to put outside to try to attract hummingbirds.

Thanks for all the comments on my "falling coins" shot yesterday. We're going to try to find some pretty fall colored aspens today and I hope to get some nice pics. Enjoy your Sunday!
  • Falling Coins - When I took this shot, I thought I might enter it in the recently concluded Dgrin challenge on motion. However, that required a SOOC shot and I decided that this needed to be cropped. I like it best viewed in the larger sizes.

I finally finished processing my most recent wedding shoot, so now I can get back to processing some more of my balloon festival shots and pictures taken at the Great Sand Dunes National Park. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
  • A little girl rides her scooter in the early morning light and is glimpsed through grassess and weeds that partially obscure her figure. I took this at the Great Sand Dunes National Park campground. At the time, I was trying to come up with a shot for the Dgrin Motion challenge. I had hoped this would show more motion than it does. However, I like the shot, in spite of the weeds and grasses in the foreground, because of the way the light is hitting the little girl.

Thanks so much for all the nice comments on the biker with the little dog pic. Sometimes you just know that a photo is going to be a bit special. The dog was so cute and the biker was so proud of it and the light behind the dog was really nice. And, luckily, as always, I had my camera on my lap in the car. (I also had my little white dog on MY lap, as well). Anyway, it makes me feel really good that so many of you liked the shot, too.

Hope your day is grand.
  • In the campground at the Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado - The early morning sun's rays light up people, grasses and shrubs. The detail of the light and its effects on the grasses and plants is best viewed in the largest sizes. I think this one is worth the time it takes to view it in the larger size. I'd suggest 3x.

Thanks to those of who commented on my "Magic Fingers" shot of the piano player. I'm not done experimenting with strobes. I've set up a gallery for these experiments. For those who are interested, it is under the category of "Other."

Have a great day!
  • Magic Fingers! - This shot is another effort with stobe lighting. I almost submitted it as my entry in the Dgrin Challenge on motion. I took the shot in a completely dark room, which is important with strobe lighting, apparently. I used my SB800 on the camera and a single ring light on the opposite side. I think I had this strobe fire four times during the exposure.

We had a great time camping in the Great Sand Dunes National Park. I'll be sharing some of those pictures with you. My entry in the Dgrin challenge was of me running down some dunes, kicking up sand. I'll be trying to catch up with all your great photos in the next day or so. I already saw a lot of wonderful ones tonight. Have a great day!
  • The Sangre de Cristo mountains behind the Great Sand Dunes National Park. This was part of the view from our campsite. This was our first morning there. On our last morning, we woke after a night of rain to find the mountain peaks completely snow-covered. And, speaking of snow, we've had some the last two days, although no serious accumulation. However, they are predicting 2 - 5 inches tomorrow. It is very early for us to be having this kind of weather. It may be a bad winter. I have my tomatoes covered with a tarp, but I'm wondering if I should just cut off all the green tomatoes and bring them in.

I'm posting a bit early and going to bed. I'll check you all out tomorrow.
  • When I saw this light coming through the clouds, I got my husband to stop the car so I could jump out and take this shot. I actually took this a couple of months ago...always intended to use it for a daily and kept forgetting about it.

Thanks so much for all the comments on the black and white shot in Great Sand Dunes National Park. I was overwhelmed by the response to it. And thanks to those of you who looked at the color versions, as well. I'm also envying a few of you your warm weather.

Have a good one!
  • I think my head's about to explode! - Playing around with strobe lighting, which is much more difficult than I'd imagined! I'm going to keep at it, though. My hubby, Phil, is my rather unwilling subject in this one.

I'm going to post a bit early and hit the hay! Busy day tomorrow!
  • Bee on gloriosa daisy - Not much to say about this one. I saw it and I shot it. Other than cropping, it is SOOC.

It has been a long and tiring day spent mostly processing wedding shots. Hope yours was good. Once again, I'm posting a bit early and going to bed. Have a nice day!
  • 12/16/12 - For all the children at Sandy Hook Elementary who will not have a chance to experience the wonder of childhood.

Thanks for your warm response to my shot of Monument Valley. Much appreciated.
  • What IS that? This little girl was the flower girl at a recent wedding shoot and I noticed that she was looking at the light coming in from a stained glass window onto her hand. She was absolutely fascinated!

Thanks so much for the many nice comments on my latest balloon festival picture. These festivals do provide so many great photo ops. It really made my day to see so many of you liking my image. I love to imagine all of us SmugMuggers, going about our days with our cameras at hand, always on the lookout for a great shot. I see us at work with our cameras, sitting in the car with them on our laps, with us in restaurants and bars, and everywhere we go. We can be found lying on the ground, perched on fences, teetering on ladders, wading in streams. We are fearless; we are strong; we are indomitable; we are smugmuggers!

Enough, already! Have a great day!
  • So Much to Shoot! - another shot of the Colorado Balloon Classic. The guy in the left foreground is my hubby, who is shooting with my other camera and a different lens. There is a lot going on in this shot, so it benefits from being viewed in a large size, I think.

Thanks for all the nice comments on another of my balloon festival shots. I really was excited shooting these images and we got so lucky with the weather. Thanks, also, to those of you who left comments on my balloon festival shot that I entered in the Dgrin challenge. It got the most responses I've ever gotten on any of my contest entries on Dgrin. So, thanks, again!

Hope your day is good (a la Don Williams)! Mine will be, since I'm spending it with my grandson, who is out of school due to a teacher's meeting or some such thing.
  • Colorado Balloon Classic - We went to this event very early this foggy morning. The balloon launch was delayed several times, but eventually, around 8:30, the balloons starting launching. There was apparently almost no wind aloft, so, after they launched, the balloons just hung around in the air over us for a long time. This shot was early in the first wave of launches. The shot was taken with my fisheye lens. I still have many, many shots of this event to process, but if you'd like to see a few of the others, they can be found here in my "Colorado Balloon Classic" gallery, which is in the "Other" category: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/Other/Colorado-Balloon-Classic/9540120_hQhxe#641316963_fagpa. I actually entered a different shot from the balloon festival in the Dgrin Challenge "A Different Perspective." I have not had any success in the challenges so far, but it is such a good learning experience that I keep trying. My train shots were done with the thought that I might use them in the challenge. With regard to the train shots, I actually took pics of two different trains. The first was not moving too fast and I got pretty cocky that I was completely safe so close to the tracks. The second train came through much faster, and, although I seemed to be fine, I must admit it was a bit more unnerving. However, I'll probably do it again, as I really did not get the shot I was hoping for.

Thanks for the great response to my train shot. A lot of you also looked at some of the other shots in my "Trains, Trains, Trains" gallery, under the "Other" category. Thanks for all the comments. I sure appreciate them.

Have a great Monday --- if that is possible?
  • Another shot from the balloon festival - I kind of liked this shot. The orientation you see is the orientation I shot with the fisheye lens. My kids were bothered by the people being on the left side. The pink inside the balloon is actually fire from the balloon's fire making engine.

Thanks a bunch for the nice comments on my neon jukebox. It is one of my personal favorites. Glad so many of you liked it. I've been processing wedding shots all day and night and my shoulders are killing me. I'm going to post a bit early and head up to bed. Have a great day!
  • I've got my eye on you! - Another balloon festival shot, featuring a sort of sinister energizer bunny staring down the ark. I did work deliberately to get the starburst where it is in the shot. These were the first two balloon aloft, so there were no other balloons in the sky at the time this was taken. Generally, I prefer the more ordinary sort of balloons to these more unusual ones, but this shot seemed a bit different to me. Perhaps, it is just me though. I don't seem to always be the best judge of my own shots.

I looked at lots of wonderful shots here today, some that absolutely took my breath away; others made me smile or laugh and others captured wonderful moments, while some showed outstanding creativity. Everyday on smugmug is like this. Even though we've never met, I'm always telling my family about many of you folks. I cannot say how much I am enjoying this experience, which is my first at participating in an online community...even though I was an early advocate and user of the Internet. (I was one of the first people AT&T drafted to develop an Internet strategy and its first Internet service.) My passion for photography made me willing to spend the time necessary to really belong to an online community and it has been wonderful so far. I look forward to looking at thousands (or, perhaps, millions) more photos. Thanks to you all for sharing your talent and images with all of us! Well, I seem to be babbling, so I'll stop and post.
  • The Ground Is Shakin' - another shot from my train photoshoot the other day. At this point, the first engine was even with me and the second engine was almost upon me (I was lying on the ground about 4 feet from the tracks, shooting up at the train). This was the second train that I'd shot and this one was going much faster than the other. I like this shot because of the motion blur.

Thanks for all the nice comments about the sinister energizer bunny shot. As usual, on smugmug, so many photos, so little time...
  • Neon Diner - This is the interior of Rosie's Diner in Monument, Colorado. It, too, was taken with the 10.5mm fisheye lens, which has made the interior seem longer than it really is.

Thanks for the comments on today's balloon festival shot. I'm sure you are getting tired of them, so I thought I'd give you a break. Hope you have some fun today. Laughter IS the best medicine!
  • Neon Jukebox - shot while eating at Rosie's Diner in Monument, Colorado. I thought the neon effects were appropriate for this shot.

Make someone laugh today!

I'd be really curious to know what went through the train drivers mind, seeing someone laying next to the track ? Certainly a different train image !
