1. Daily shots for the dailies forum on Dgrin

Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

Does anyone know how Phil Nix is? I've tried to find out but haven't learned anything. I know he was ill and I'm worried, as he has not posted in a long time.

Thanks so much for your encouragement and critique of my shot of the old bikes. Much appreciated. Constructive criticism is always welcome.
• 9/14/12 - Jackson Lake, Grand Tetons; best viewed in the largest sizes. I keep hoping I'll come across one of those wonderful scenes in the mountains with tons of wildflowers in the foreground and it never seems to happen for me. I thought this foreground was not too bad. I certainly should not complain about the Grand Tetons because they are so gorgeous in any conditions. That is fireweed blooming along the edge of the lake. We saw lots of fireweed blooming in high mountain meadows on the way to the Grand Tetons, but the views were not expansive like this one.

Thanks so much for your warm response to my shot of Devil's Tower and the hay field. I can't tell you how many shots I've taken of hay fields and very few have even been worth processing, so it was a treat to find one with something like Devil's Tower in the bg. The drive from the main highway to Devil's Tower is through lovely agricultural areas...well worth seeing even if there were not Devil's Tower at the end. Thanks also for your suggestions for improving the sky. I've actually got a collection of skies that I can use to move into shots with lousy skies and on a couple of occasions, I've even created my own clouds, with mixed results.
Constructive criticism is always welcome! Have a great day!
 • 8/5/12 - Jackson Lake Spillway, Grand Teton National Park; best viewed in the larger sizes

Thanks so much for all your comments on my shot of downtown Dubois. I feel very honored you took the time on a day when smugmug had so many other outstanding shots! I certainly enjoyed checking them out!
 • 11/8/12 - Highway worker; I grabbed this shot of a highway construction worker when we had to wait to be led through a construction zone on the way to Grand Teton National Park.

Thanks for your warm response to my shot of the antique drilling equipment. So many wonderful shots on smugmug today and so much creativity in evidence!

Constructive criticism is always welcome. I shot this through the window of the car and did not have much leeway in terms of the composition.
 • 8/16/12 - Smoke from the Hyde Park fire near Ft. Collins makes for a spectacular sunset. This was taken when we were just starting out for South Dakota, but I just finished the processing of this file yesterday. We actually were in a Walmart parking lot when I took this shot. Clearly, this would have been better if I'd been in a better location without so much commercial stuff in the foreground, but, unfortunately, I did not have a chance to do that and had to take my sunset as it came! Constructive criticism is always welcome.

Thanks for the comments on my shot of the light trails car. I thought you all would get a kick out of that. Hopefully, I'll do it better the next time.
 • 8/18/12 - Cat; best viewed in the largest sizes.

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the bighorn sheep. I was sorry to have cut off the hooves, but I took the shot from the window of the car and the sheep was coming toward me and I simply could not get all of it in with the lens I was using and, of course, I only had a second to get the shot. We were out and about all day today, so I did not get much chance to comment; hope to catch up tomorrow.

Constructive criticism is always welcome.
 • 8/10/12 - Bald Eagle; I watched this bald eagle for about an hour and a half, during which it did very little. About in the middle of that time, it called out about four times. Finally, as I was about to give up, the eagle finally flew off and made several passes up the Wind River, although it did not catch anything. I got some flying shots, but I don't think they are as good as this shot. I was so excited to get this close to the eagle; I've only seen one other and that was from 1/4 mile. This time I was just across the river from him/her. It was in the sun and very hot; by the end of the hour and a half, I was trembling from hunching over the tripod for so long.

We've been traveling back to Colorado Springs for several days and have been without 'Net access. We'll be here for a month while we have some more repairs made to our RV. We've been out for six weeks and we've had a great time in South Dakota and then in the Dubois, Wyoming area. I have to admit I am stressed the entire time we are actually driving the big kahuna down the highways, but, otherwise, we've had a great time. Adjusting to living in an RV has not been difficult for us. It is rather like living in a luxury hotel suite. I've cooked almost all our meals on either our little stovetop, the convection oven, or the portable grill. Wyoming is a beautiful state; there is a lot more irrigation than I'd expected, so much of it is quite green.

I gather that I missed a discussion about whether or not folks wished to receive constructive criticism. As one of my main reasons for joining the dailies has been to improve my skills and my photographs, I always welcome constructive criticism. Any suggestions for ways to iimprove are most welcome!

Thanks, as always, for your comments on my shots. It is good to be back!
 • 8/2/12 - Antler Sculpture - we visited a little gallery in Dubois, WY which features everything made of antlers or horns of some sort. The owner said that he finds a lot of the materials himself but also buys some from others. This was outside the shop and was, by far, the most intricate creation.

Thanks for all the comments on my shot of the piano player. You guys always make me feel good!

Have a great day!
 • 9/6/12 - Near Dubois, WY; a lot of the landscape between Dubois and Lander looks very similar to this. Best viewed in the largest sizes. Although it is not as dramatic as the shots I've seen of the Palouse, this reminds me a bit of that kind of landscape in the way the light and shadow highlights the contours of the hills. It is very pretty country, with lots of prosperous looking farms. I was surprised that there is a lot of crop irrigating being done in the area. I actually shot this from our moving car. I've discovered if I shoot at a shutter speed of 1/1000 second from the moving car, I generally get fairly sharp shots.

Thanks for the comments and support on my portrait of the nature lover. Much appreciated. There were so many wonderful shots on smugmug and I really enjoyed looking at them. I learn so much just by looking at your shots!

Constructive criticism is always welcome!
 • 7/31/12 - Rainstorm; best viewed in the larger sizes. Shot on the road between Dubois and Lander, WY.

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the rodeo in the late afternoon light. The Dubois Rodeo is billed as a "family" rodeo and I noted that often several members of the same family would compete in events. Compared to the National Stock Show Rodeo in Denver, the quality of the competitors here were not even comparable. There was only a single professional rodeo rider in this rodeo this night.

Have a great day, everyone!
 • 8/6/2012 - Colorful leaves outside the Fremont County Museum; not sure what they are.

Thanks, everyone, who commented on my shot of the Jackson Lake spillway in the Grand Tetons and helped make it to the #1 spot at the end of the day. You made my day! I wasn't sure whether people would like the mountains peeking above the spillway or find them distracting...I was ambivalent about it myself.

Have a great week. We'll be traveling tomorrow, so I don't know if I'll be able to post or comment, but will be back on Tuesday in any event.
 • 8/3/12 - At the Fremont County Pioneer Museum, this was inside one of the restored pioneer homes in their pioneer village there; this is an outstanding museum, especially when you consider that it is located in a pretty small city. Located in Lander, WY

Thanks for the comments on my shot of the antlered sculpture. It was certainly unique.
 • 9/3/12 - View from the Longhorn Ranch Resort near Dubois, Wyoming; best viewed in the larger sizes. This view was just outside our RV here and is quite typical of the formations right around Dubois. I think these are called the Painted Hills or the Wyoming Badlands.

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the horse. I certainly should have been more aware of the position of the building in the bg, so that it would not seem to be coming out of the horse's head. Also, I appreciate Linda's tip about the angle of the head; I've never have known, as I thought the horse looked great from that angle. But, of course, I know next to nothing about horses.

Constructive criticism is always welcome!
 • 8/4/12 - In Dubois, WY, on the main street.

I surely appreciated your warm response to my shot in the old kitchen. Thanks so much!
 • 8/1/12 - Scott Joplin in Dubois, WY - shot in downtown Dubois, the owner of this shop sits outside playing Scott Joplin rags on his old and not-too-in-tune piano. Best viewed in the largest sizes.

I sure appreciate the warm response you folks gave my shot of the rainstorm. It is always a treat to capture a weather event of some sort. I hope someday I'll get to capture one of those amazing supercell shots that some of you have gotten. Did you see the shot today of the rare tornado at 12,000 feet on Mt. Evans in Colorado? Pretty neat!
 • 7/30/12 - At the Dubois Rodeo. Shot directly into the sun. I like the light, though.

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the little pistol on the horse. Most appreciated!
 • 8/29/12 - Jackson Lake, Grand Teton National Park; best viewed in the largest sizes. Like Paul, I often lament the lack of interesting things to include in the foreground of my landscape shots. I was pleased, however, with this foreground. I decided the b/w shot had more impact than the color version.

Thanks for your warm response to my shot of the seedhead. I agree with those of you who suggested a tighter crop would be better.

Have a great day! Constructive criticism is always welcome!
 • 7/28/12 - Fearless - I had planned to enter a b/w version of this shot in the recent dgrin challenge, Essence of Youth, but lost track of the days and forgot to enter. Best viewed in the larger sizes. I loved this tiny little girl; she actually had a faster time on the barrel race than the winner of the adult women's race. This was a difficult shot, as I was shooting almost directly into the evening sun. This was the weekly Dubois, WY rodeo.

Thanks so much for making my shot of the burro the #1 shot for the day! Quite a surprise!
 • 1/3/13 - Inside Walmart

Thanks so much for your warm response to my shot of the ferruginous hawk! Today was really an amazing day on smugmug...an incredible number of incredible shots! You all outdid yourselves!
 • 7/26/12 - Wild donkey in Custer State Park in South Dakota; best viewed in the largest sizes to see the lovely fuzzy ears. Custer State Park has a whole herd of these wild donkeys. They come right up to the cars, hoping to get carrots.

I was overwhelmed with your response to my shot of the train engineer oiling the wheels of the train. Thanks so much!
