Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

Bar, best viewed in the largest sizes, as I was really pleased with the detail and dof that I was able to get in this very low light hand held shot. The ceiling is a modern version of pressed tin.

Thanks for the comments on the shot of the cocktail tumblers. Much appreciated. I've been busy much of the day processing shots from yesterday's outing to the mall, but this is the only one I had time to upload. I'll get the rest uploaded tomorrow. Enjoy the weekend!

  • Pizza Food Stand at the Rodeo - I liked the colors and the pretty sky.

I really appreciated all the nice comments on my shot of Tommy Turvy and his horse. My hubby and I are putting down cork flooring in our den, so today we pulled up all the old carpet and prepared the surface for the new floor. Hope you have a great Sunday!
  • Clown

Thanks for your comments on my rodeo steer wrangling shot. Hope everyone is hanging in there with all the bitter winter weather and storms. It was cold even in the house today; the heat has trouble keeping up when the temps are so frigid.
  • The shoeshine is still popular at the National Western Stock Show.

Thanks for your comments on my recent shots; not feeling at all well today, so did not get any processing done. Just a bad cold, though, of no great import. Hope your weekend was everything you hoped.
  • One more rodeo shot - I observed that the bronc riders have two different styles. The style shown here where the cowboy sits more or less upright on the horse. In the other style, the cowboy lies back along the horse's back and seems to try to stay that way for the entire eight seconds. The horses also had their styles. In the style shown here, the horse kicks its back heels way up into the air; other horses liked to jump straight up into the air with all four feet off the ground at once. Also, many horses kept bucking for quite a while after the rider was off. At the end of the eight second ride, two other fellas on horseback would get on either side of the rider on the bronc and the rider would grab onto on of the other men and pull himself off the bucking bronc. This actually seemed to be quite an intricate maneuver requiring a lot of skill on the part of the other two cowboys and their horses.

Thanks for the comments on my shot of the floating stairs at the federal building. I sure appreciate you all taking the time to stop by and check out my photos. As usual, the week is flying by. Hope you have a great Thursday!
  • I don't wanna come out and play! - One of the funniest moments at the rodeo was this one, when they opened the gate and the bronc decided not to come out. He just stood there. They finally shut the gate and then opened it up a few moments later and he stood there again for quite a while but then decided to commence bucking. The cowboy got to have another chance with a different horse, since so much of his 8 seconds was taken up with the horse just standing still --- which affected the cowboy's ability to get a high score.

Thanks for your warm response to my portrait of the cowboy. Many of you thought this man had a very interesting face with lots of character and I agree wholeheartedly. He was a wonderful guy to photograph. Some people just seem made for the camera, don't they?

My cold is not quite so miserable, so it looks like I'll live. My poor hubby has it now. Hope your week is going better than ours!
  • A team of Clydesdale horses pulling a wagon - these horses are stunningly beautiful. Probably best viewed in the larger sizes. I did find that photographing black horses was generally more difficult in the lower light conditions than photographing white or lighter colored horses. Also, for teams of horses like this one, the light in the coliseum would vary quite a bit from one part of the team to the other, so it was difficult to expose the whole team properly. At this point the team was coming almost directly at me at a pretty good clip. I was sitting on the first row on the floor of the coliseum. Because I'm short and there were bars in front of me, I ended up spending almost the entire time on my knees peeking through two of the bars. It was a bit awkward but I did have a pretty good view most of the time.

Thanks for the positive comments on my shot of the female barrel racer at full gallop. It must be really thrilling to be going at such a fast pace on top of the horse. I really enjoyed browsing through the pics today...so much variety! Enjoy your day!
  • This young lady was competing in the barrels competition at the rodeo. Once a horse and rider have gone around each of the barrels, they high-tail it back to the starting line. It is amazing how fast they go. This shot captures the speed of that last part of the ride, I think. Best viewed in the larger sizes.

I'm so grateful for all the nice responses to my shot of the calf roping, as well as the suggestions for taking better shots of such events in the future. I did take a few shots at higher shutter speeds, such as 1/400 sec. and, although they were sharper, they also seemed to be darker. They had spotlights on the arena, but it was still a relatively dark setting in which to capture such rapid action. An outdoor rodeo would provide much better photographic conditions, I think. I've processed a bunch more shots, although I still have a lot more to go and they are in a new gallery, "Rodeo Shots." It snowed here a tiny bit today but we still aren't getting much in the way of precipitation. Hope your week is going well.
  • Calf roping event at the Western National Stock Show Pro Rodeo in Denver - Hallelujah! We got to go to the rodeo and it was so much fun, although my knees are bruised from kneeling most of the time. I really had no idea what settings would be best for capturing these rodeo action shots. Most of the time I used a shutter speed of 1/250 sec., with ISO 200, and exposure compensation cranked up to +5. As a result of the slower speed, the focus is not as sharp as I'd like. I've only looked at a few of the pictures, so far, so I've no good idea of what I've gotten. I processed just nine shots and decided to post this one. I have even more respect for great photographers like Gene and Andrea, who consistently give us such wonderful shots.

Thanks for all the positive comments on my shot of the horse from the zoo. It was processed. Hope your week is doing well.
  • There were not a lot of falls at the rodeo the day we went. This was one of the them. The cowboy did not appear to be hurt, although he did seem a bit stiff....small wonder! For the bull riding, the cowboys all wore face masks. The second the cowboy was off the bull, the guy on the right would be trying to capture its attention. This needs to be viewed in the largest sizes.

Thanks so much for your warm response to my shot of the Clydesdales. I also really appreciate the suggestions for future rodeo shots. I still have a lot more of these shots to process but I am really enjoying this work. Enjoy the weekend!
  • Giraffe? - this shot is actually two images of the same shot with one of them being rotated horizontally, so that they appear to come together to make an animal with two eyes. You'd never have just this view of a giraffe, though, as the original shot was at a bit of an odd angle.

Thanks to those of you who commented on my shot of the lion with its tongue curled up over its nose. Much appreciated. I continue to be amazed by the talent shown on smugmug. So many creative people...keeps me inspired to try to keep up.

Have a great week!
  • A recent snow

Thanks for taking the time to stop by and comment on my photo of the lions. It is always so interesting to hear how others see my photos.

Enjoy the weekend!
  • Young lion cub (about a year old) at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Best viewed in the largest sizes. Photographed through an extremely scratched and dirty glass. When we arrived at the lion exhibit, a whole group of lions were sleeping, While we watched, various ones woke up, licked others, looked at us and did a variety of other things. In spite of the dirty and scratched glass, it was one of the most interesting visits we'd had to the lions.

Thanks for all your comments and feedback on my shot of the escalator at the mall. There was no absolute consensus about which pic was the better one. More of you liked the color version, but quite a few liked the other two versions best. I've found that I develop biases for certain pics as I work on them but they aren't always the ones you all like the most. It is always interesting to have a direct comparison like this one was. We didn't get to go to the rodeo today because it was sold out, but we have tickets for Tuesday's matinee and we paid more and got seats on the first row right on the floor of the rodeo, so I'm hoping to have a good view for photos. Hope you have some fun today!
  • Captured at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo; best viewed in the largest sizes

Thanks for all the comments on the pseudo giraffe picture. It was fun to create.
  • Just Pussycats! - I thought this shot from our recent trip to the zoo provided a slightly different look at the King of Beasts. This was shot through very dirty and scratched glass and I did have to do quite a bit to pull out the detail. It does look better in the larger sizes.

Glad some of you thought the shot of the reluctant bronco was funny. I'm feeling much better today. How often we take our good health for granted. A bit of sickness sure makes you appreciate it. It's Friday already. Hope everyone has fun plans for the weekend. I'm off to pick up my new glasses today. Yea! I'll be able to SEE better!
  • I processed three different versions of this shot and would appreciate your feedback on which you prefer. The others are here: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/Other/Odds-and-Ends/7032233_9SbQx#1157066432_mUkhh. I think it is worth viewing in the larger sizes. I happened to see this lady coming down the escalator and grabbed a really quick shot. I didn't expect much, but found I it appealed to me for some reason. Don't know if it will appeal to anyone else, though.

Thanks, as always, for your comments on my shot of the fish window at the Orvis store. I loved the colors, too. I really did not have to process the shot, as the colors were just like that. Amazing number of great shots on smugmug today. The snowstorm back east is certainly providing a lot of great opportunities, but the rest of you are also discovering wonderful photo ops. Great work, folks!
  • Self Portrait in Blocks - I'm not very comfortable in front of the camera, and I wasn't too pleased with the self portraits I managed to take. I, therefore, searched for ways to modify my image and had very little success with those. Finally, I hit upon the idea of breaking the image up into different blocks of color. This is my first attempt and I'm not especially pleased with the way I divided the image. However, I'm out of time, so I'll take another shot at this technique later, but here's my submission for Janet's self portrait challenge.

I had a very busy day and did not get to comment as much as usual. I'll try to make up for that tomorrow. Thanks to all of you who commented on my most recent daily of the bar. We're supposed to get snow today, but, often, our predictions of big snowfalls turn out to be non-events. Hope your weekends are going well!
  • An array of glass goblets at Crate and Barrel. I changed the stripe design with "liquify." Probably best viewed in the largest sizes.

You guys are so great. It was wonderful to see all the SPs and know that so many of us were working on the same challenge. I so enjoyed seeing the faces that go with the photos I've been admiring for so long. And thanks to all of you for making me feel better about a shot of myself. I must admit that I think I look better in a faded version where people cannot see my wrinkles and the effects of gravity. Hope you had a good weekend. It was my daughter's birthday and we had the family over for dinner. Hope your week is off to a good start.
  • I shot this at Pottery Barn in the mall; I just liked something about the composition with the mall in the bg. It IS best viewed in the larger sizes. I've shot photos at Crate and Barrel and Pottery Barn a number of times and they have always been quite nice about allowing me to wander around and take pictures. In fact, at the mall, all the stores but one were very gracious about allowing me to take photos. I was approached, however, by a mall security man who told me not to photograph any "structures" at the mall. Apparently, the concern was terrorism.

Thanks for the nice comments on my shot of the glasses and the liquified bg. I hosted my book review group's meeting today. Our book was "Major Pettigrew's Last Stand" by Helen Simonson. It is a fantastic book, which I can recommend to all you readers out there. Have a great Tuesday!
  • Shot in the Orvis store, this is a glass design, but not stained glass.

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the windows in the mall. The snowstorm in the East has certainly created a lot of wonderful photo ops that smugmuggers are capturing. Really enjoyed looking through all the shots this evening. The weekend is nearly upon us again. Hope your week has gone well.

Fascinating shot, so much great detail!

I did look at this in original, and it's impressive. Love the detail of the light coming through the patterns around the bar itself and I'm very drawn to the light bouncing off he liquor bottles and glasses. Neat colored panel to the upper left too. the repetition but variation in the line of chairs is pretty cool too. Great work!
