1. Daily shots for the dailies forum on Dgrin

Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

I appreciated the comments I received on the shot of the aloe buds. Tremendous number of wonderful pics on smugmug today, although there is certainly not anything unusual about that. However, I continue to be amazed by the talent and creativity displayed here.

 • 11/26/12 - Some type of burr, shot earlier in the summer but just rediscovered and uploaded.

Thanks to those of you who commented on my shot of the backlit tree and grasses!
 • Some type of burr; best viewed in the largest sizes
Thanks for all the nice comments on my lilac shot. I was really please so many of you focused on the dof, because that is what I really liked about the shot. I do treasure each of the comments and appreciate the time you've taken out of your busy lives to provide encouragement to me and others here.

Hope your weekend is terrific! We are expecting nice weather!
 • Hummingbird - I am a bit ambivalent about this shot because the hummer's iridescence is just SOOO high voltage, but I decided that maybe it was worth featuring as a daily. This is best viewed in the largest sizes. Quite a lot of you are wondering about the shutter speed. It is 1/1600 sec. I've found I can usually freeze hummers at about 1/1200 sec. or faster. I bumped the speed up on this day because it was exceptionally bright and sunny!

Thanks to all of you who commented on my shot of the white cactus flower. Much of the snow melted today, although it kept on snowing until about 11 a.m. The wedding shoot went well, I think, although I've not yet looked closely at the images. They'll keep me busy processing for several weeks.

Hope every has a chance to get outside and enjoy nicer weather today!
 • A vintage Corvette at a small gathering of Corvettes in Scottsdale, AZ, last year. I was in the mood for a car shot and I had played around with this one a bit to give it a look more like a silkscreen print, or, possibly, a woodcut.

Thanks a bunch for your comments on my shot of the lizard. No, he wasn't a pet. I went to a local reptiles store to shoot some snakes and lizards. The shot was made through a very dirty glass but I was pleased with the detail and colors.

Hope your week is going well.
 • I think this is mescal bean, but I am not certain; best viewed in the largest sizes. The bloom actually reminds me of the blooms of wisteria. I hope you will forgive me for posting two shots today, as I did not post on Thursday because of my extra early appointment for the epidural injection in my spine; then, the sedative they gave me caused me to sleep for a good part of the rest of the day. So, if you have time, please take a look at my other shot of the barrel cactus in bloom. Thanks.

Hope everyone has a decent Friday and is getting ready for the weekend.
 • Firefighters watch as a managed fire burns itself out.

Thanks for all the comments on my shot yesterday, which was of three glass globes, which contained inclusions of a silvery clumped substance. The pic was shot at Crate and Barrel. The globes were fairly large, about 7 inches across.

Today I have a sort of riddle for you to solve. The following statement can also be stated as a well-known cliche: Surveillance should precede saltation.
 • Fool's Hollow Lake at sunset; near Show Low, Arizona. This was one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever seen and the entire show lasted quite a while, so I took lots of shots from different vantage points.

Thanks so much for the comments on my shot of the teasel seedheads. They actually were lying at that angle to the rock, so I did not have to change anything. Of course, I'm sure when the plant originally was growing, the teasel was standing straight up but over the winter, it must have sagged into this position. Hope you have nice weather and are able to get outside and enjoy your Saturday!
 • A mourning dove; best viewed in the largest sizes

I appreciated all the nice comments on my shot down the corrider at the outdoor mall in Sedona, especially given all the wonderful photos on smugmug today. Hope you are having a great photographic weekend!
 • A hummingbird with her babies in the nest; note the poop on the branch. She has removed it from the nest. This photo is best viewed in the largest sizes. There were three babies in the nest but you can only see two of them here. There were tons of little branches all around and in front of the nest, so it was difficult to get a clear shot. Definitely needs to be viewed in the largest sizes.
Thanks for the supportive comments on the shot of the glass vase in front of the window. Very encouraging. My hubby and I went to a funeral at the Air Force Academy for one of Phil's classmates in his Academy squadron. He was a general and so there was even a fly-by in the missing man formation at the cemetery. I took a few pics and hope to have a decent one of the fly-by and some of the chapel at the Academy. A sad reason to go there, though. Have a great day.
 • Male cardinal - I had been watching an eagle sitting near its nest about a quarter of a mile away and taking shots of it, when I spotted a male and female cardinal almost directly in front of me. I was able to take quite a few shots of each before they flew off. Since we don't have cardinals in the Colorado Springs area, I was thrilled to get a chance to photograph these glorious birds.

Thanks to those of you who commented on my shot of the aloe in bloom. I'm off to the doctor's later today to get a consult about my sciatica, which flared up again on our trip, and then schedule an injection in my spine. My last shot lasted over a year, so I hope to get good results from another one. Hope everyone has a good day!
 • A female cardinal; best viewed in the largest sizes
Thanks for all the comments on my photo today. Lots of amazing photos to look at today. The creativity you all show is really inspiring. You make me see the world in a new way every single day! Hope you enjoy your weekend!

 • View of the Grand Canyon from the South Rim with clouds making shadow patterns on the formations.

Thanks for the comments on the shot of the cactus. Really appreciated. Enjoy your day!
Thanks so much for all the nice comments on my peony shot. It is very encouraging to get such nice reviews for such talented folks. I'm constantly inspired by your wonderful shots.

Hope you enjoy your weekend!
 • Light in the Tunnel - shot in Sedona, Arizona

Thanks for all the comments on my alien spider tent. You guys are the most supportive folks anywhere.
 • At Tlaquepaque shopping center in Sedona: best viewed in the largest sizes; ever since I took this shot, I've been meaning to use it as a daily and keep getting sidetracked to something else, so finally...

Thanks for the encouraging comments on my shot of the ball jars on the counter. I just got lucky with that one, being in the right place at the right time.
 • Tlaquepaque shopping center in Sedona; I thought the light and shadow was interesting, as well as the depth of the walkway.

Thanks for the comments on my shot of the Caterpillar factory yard. Enjoy your day!
 • A female great blue heron sees her mate approaching; I watched this nest for many hours and everytime she saw her mate approaching (even before I could see him), she would assume this posture and her neck feathers would flare around her. Best viewed in the largest sizes.

Thanks for all the nice comments on my "Memory of Innisfree" image. I enjoyed creating it and I must admit it is gratifying that many of you liked it. It is hump day already. Hope you have found some beauty in your life this week. It seems to me that the beauty is everywhere around us.
 • A great blue heron pair checking out the neighbor's nest; best viewed in the largest size.

I spent about six hours photographing and observing this pair of great blue herons. They were remarkably atune to one another and often would almost perfectly mimic one another's position and activity. I'm sure I'll have more photos of these two for my future dailies and hope I won't bore you all with them. Thanks for the comments on my orchid shot...very much appreciated. Wow! So many great shots today, but I have to say that my favorite was Chuck and Paula's shot of the green limes...absolutely fantastic!

Have a terrific day!
 • One view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona; best viewed in the largest sizes. I liked this one because the snow on the farm rim showed up pretty well.

Thanks for all the comments on the mimosa. I hadn't realized that mimosas were such a beloved three. Of course, this one was only a shrub but it was still pretty.
