Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

  • All dressed up and nowhere to go. Best viewed in the largest sizes. I've been meaning to use this as my daily for quite a while and it kept getting preempted by something else. I liked the way both horses were in the same position with their spiffy coats!

I was sure surprised at the warm response to my shot of the foggy morning in my garden. Seems like there have been lots of better foggy shots than mine, but I still appreciate all the nice comments. Makes me awfully good.

Have a great Sunday!
  • The latest iteration of telcos trying to conceal cellphone towers by trying to make them look like windmills. I took this shot a couple of mornings ago when we were driving around looking for hoarfrost to shoot.

I appreciate everyone who took the time to stop by and comment on my shot of the sunflower seedhead with hoarfrost.

Have a great day!
  • These trees covered in hoarfrost looked like the flocked Christmas trees of my youth. Best viewed in the larger sizes. Today was quite nice, but this was taken just a few days ago. I liked the way the trees were arranged on the little hill.

I appreciate everyone's comments on my shot of the meadowlark. You all keep me inspired to continue to improve my skills. Have a great day!
  • Hoarfrost covering trees and grasses. Best viewed in the largest sizes to see the hoarfrost on the tree branches. This hoarfrost was kind of hit or miss. Some places it would cover all the trees, grasses, etc. Other places, it would only be on some trees and not the grasses. Other places it would be only on one side of the trees. It is caused by fog which freezes on the branches and plants. As you can see i the shot, it is till a bit foggy here.

Thanks for your encouraging comments on my shot of the bar window. We went to see a production of "Music Man" tonight. It was a lot of fun! I had seen the movie many times, but I enjoyed the play more.

Have some fun today!
  • Sandhill cranes flying in the early morning at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in NM.

Thank you all for your positive comments on my sunrise shot of the snow geese. Really made my day! Hope you are all enjoying your weekend!
  • Great blue heron, photographed at the Dancing Cranes Guest House in San Antonio, New Mexico, not far from Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Best viewed in the larger sizes. The owners of the B&B have created a wildlife refuge on their property that attracts many kinds of birds. I had been watching this heron for about two hours and the light had moved a lot. I had to shoot this into the bright late afternoon sun. Luckily, the grasses by the pond blocked the light a bit and I think I bumped the exposure comp up. I liked the light that resulted. Hope you like it, too.

Oh, my! I'm so honored that you all made my sunrise shot of the geese flyout the #1 shot today. I was just so lucky that the sunrise that morning was spectacular and took quite a long time to play out, so I got a lot of shots against the sunrise, which had quite a few different looks. Thanks, everyone, for making my day!

Have a great Wednesday!
  • Great blue heron flying, photographed at the Dancing Cranes Guest House in San Antonio, New Mexico, not far from Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Best viewed in the largest size. The owners of the B&B have created a wildlife refuge on their property that attracts many kinds of birds. Really needs to be viewed in the largest size. I was shooting almost directly into the sun for this one and was surprised I was able to pick up so much detail. The sky was actually washed out and I added a light gradient to it to give it a more natural look.

Thanks so much for making my shot of the birds against the early morning sky your #1 for the day. It is always such a thrill when that happens! You guys are so generous with your compliments.

Hope your week gets off to a nice start!
  • A great blue heron, photographed at the Dancing Cranes Guest House in San Antonio, New Mexico, not far from Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. Best viewed in the largest size. The owners of the B&B have created a wildlife refuge that attracts many kinds of birds. I almost did not take this shot, as I generally don't like to shoot birds with grass or other things partly obscuring them. But when I looked at the image in the full size, I saw that the heron is quite sharp and I really liked the glow in the grass from the setting sun. You really have to look at it in at least 3x to get the full effect.

Boy, you folks are being awfully kind to me this week. I really did not expect the "valentine's shot" to do very well, so I was amazed to see it at #1 a few minutes ago! Thanks, everyone! I promise to quit showing the Bosque del Apache shots pretty soon, but I still have quite a few I'd like to share. I so rarely get such an opportunity!

Have a bit of fun today!

I was lucky to catch him in this position, as he was moving about pretty rapidly.

Thanks you all for your response to my reflections shot. Still cold here with a bit of snow. I envy those of you who are having spring!

  • Sandhill cranes and snow geese at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in NM. Best viewed in the larger sizes. I liked the cranes surrounded by the white snow geese.

Thank you for all your comments on my shot of the great blue heron in the grass. I'm feeling so pumped from your warm response to my Bosque del Apache shots.

So many terrific shots today on smugmug and so many people doing really neat series. I thoroughly enjoyed my browsing among your great photos. So much talent!

Thanks for your warm response to my shot of the rose with water drops. Also, thank you for all the birthday wishes. When you get to be my age, you aren't really certain you want to celebrate the occasion.

We finally got a little rain and sleet today, our first real moisture since fall. Hopefully, this will slightly ameliorate the fire danger.

Have a great day, everyone!
  • Part of the sunrise flyout of the snow geese at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in NM. Best viewed in the largest sizes. Most of the shots from Bosque del Apache are SOOC. As I was taking the photos, I was adjusting the exposure compensation and the shutter speed, depending on the amount of light available. This shot was taken the same morning as the shot with the shades of pink in the sky and tons of birds flying. Both were SOOC. The differences were just a matter of a few minutes.

Thanks for you comments on my shot of the spring flowering branch. We did have a very springlike day today, so I know it will get here eventually.

Have a great day!
  • The morning flyout of snow geese at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in NM. This is actually a tiny proportion of the snow geese that were part of the main flyout. When that happens, the sky is pretty much covered totally with birds. There are some shots of that in my "Birds" gallery. They're not as interesting as photos, but they are pretty interesting in terms of understanding the flyout event.

I was amazed by your response to my shot of the cookware with the reflections. Some of you wondered where I was, since I didn't show up much in the reflections. I was off a bit to the side. Unfortunately, that nice cookware is not mine. I took the shot at Williams Sonoma.

Hope your week started well and that you have a great day!
  • Sandhill cranes flying over Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge in NM; best viewed in the largest sizes

Thanks to all of you who commented on my shot of the synchronized snow geese. I think you may be right; it will show up as an Olympic event soon....synchronized flying!

Hope you are having a good weekend. I think we're going to see the "King's Speech" tomorrow.
  • The beginning of the snow goose flyout in Bosque del Apache in the evening; best viewed in the largest sizes. You can even see poop from some of the geese in the air. Although this is probably not the best shot visually, I liked it because virtually every bird is in focus.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my shot of the sandhill cranes. I'm still processing these shots and hope to have another file done sometime tomorrow. Later today we're going to have dinner with my daughter, her hubby and son, who are celebrating finally paying off the last of their student loans.

Have a great Sunday, everyone!
  • Snow geese in flight. Best viewed in the largest sizes. I liked the position of these guys' heads and they way they are synchronized. When two geese are flying close together, they seem to tend to be synchronized. In the original version of the shot, you can see a stream of poop coming from the left bird. I removed it in this shot, but the original version is in my "Birds" gallery if you want to see it. This was taken at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I'm plugging along processing these shots, but still have many, many to go.

Gee, thank you all for your warm response to my shot of the bee in the air. Sure makes my day! I really enjoyed all the shots you smuggers put up today. Such astounding variety and so much creativity! Have fun on your weekend!
  • Snow goose in flight at Bosque del Apache; I liked this shot because of the telecom tower in the bg. Otherwise, nothing really special.

Thanks you so much for your warm response to my shot of the flying great blue heron. It is amazing how patience eventually pays off with some good shots. I stood watching that one heron for about two hours. I took hundreds of shots of it and, probably, about ten are really pretty good.

Have a great day!
  • Reflections in a Pot and Spoon - I have a black and white version of this which I like, but I think the blue colors in the reflections really add something special to the shot. The black and white can be seen here: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/Other/Odds-and-Ends/7032233_9SbQx#1190615582_DUtWr.

I thought you all might like a respite from the shots of the birds of Bosque del Apache. I'm still processing those and will have more of them to share.

Looking through all your shots today really got me inspired! Now, if I can only carry through on that inspiration! Thanks so much for your encouraging comments on my shot of the flying sandhill cranes. For some reason, they were easier for me to capture in the air than on the ground. Strange, huh?

We did go to see "The King's Speech" today. I think Colin Firth's performance in that is probably the most outstanding job of acting I've ever seen! It is such a great story of a man persevering and conquering a physical and mental affliction.

Have a great week!
  • Western meadowlark; best viewed in the largest size
We just got back from Bosque del Apache in NM. We had a great time and the birds were amazing. This shot was actually taken in the yard of the fabulous B&B where we stayed --- the Dancing Cranes Guest House. The owners have created their own wildlife refuge and I spent quite a few hours photographing birds there. They had many meadowlarks, which I don't get to see very often. They are such beautiful birds and amazing singers. Hope you enjoy this shot!

I didn't have too much time to comment but I did get quite a few of your shots and was amazed at the quality and wonderful variety. You folks really outdid yourselves yesterday. Hope you have a great day!

I am so jealous! I've got one in three years, and it was in a windstorm and he looks more like a yellow robin on a stick! THIS is a meadowlark!
