Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

The Wonder of Childhood - Two small children are entranced with the fish in a small pond at the Denver Botanical Garden. There is nice detail if you want to look at it in the largest sizes. We're off this morning to go camping near Crede, Colorado with our kids and their families. It is supposed to be pretty chilly up there. Anyway, I'll miss commenting and posting for a couple of days until we get back. Hope you all have a great weekend!

• This is not a recent shot, but one that I took last summer. I thought I'd like to share it with the community. View the detail of this hummingbird in the largest sizes. Thanks to those of you who commented on my Colorado Springs sunset shot. We're headed up to Denver today to help our daughter lay a floor in a ballet studio. Jill's friend is opening the studio and Jill will be teaching pilates and some other types of movement, as well as ballet there.
• View the detail of this hummingbird in the largest sizes. When we go camping, I always put out a hummingbird feeder and this time I had a hummer on the feeder within a minute. As a result, I spent quite a bit of time with my 400mm lens staking out the feeding area. The light was lower than I'd have liked, so I wasn't able to shoot at as high a shutter speed as I'd have preferred. Nonetheless, I got some decent shots of hummers and this is one of them. So many great photos today. I had a great time looking at them and being inspired.
• A view of Clear Creek Falls in Colorado, just off State Hwy 149, south of Lake City. If you look closely or in the larger sizes, you'll see a bit of a rainbow in the lower 1/3 of the falls. This is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Colorado. There is a parking area very close to the viewing area and when you get out of your car, you do not even hear the falls. You really don't see the stream as you drive in, so you have no idea where the falls is going to be and it is stunning to see this huge drop and volume of water pouring over the cliff. Thanks so much, everyone, who took the time to comment on the image from my first photoshoot with a model. I really appreciated the comments and suggestions. Smugmuggers are truly the most supportive group of photographers anywhere!
• While trying to capture some ants and aphids in my garden, I noticed this little spider (about a half inch across) with a large fly. The spider was already sucking the insides out of the fly, which was already dead or paralyzed. I managed to bring this pair into the house, where I experimented with a number of different lighting arrangements...trying to get the details of the spider, while maintaining a good dof. It was very difficult and I never succeeded in getting the kind of sharpness and clarity that I wanted. However, I think the subject is sufficiently interesting to use one of these images for my daily. The other images from this effort are in my macro gallery (under the "other" category). I think for this shot, you should probably view it in the original size. The whole time I was shooting this the spider was moving around on the white paper. Thanks for your kind comments on my iris pic today. There were a lot of wonderful images posted today. By the way, has anyone heard from Dave Dedman? I haven't seen anything of his in a while and I know he had pneumonia. I sure hope he's ok. If some of you are communicating with him, give him my best wishes.
• Along the S. Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon in Colorado. Along one stretch of the river, the rocks were bright green with algae. I think the water level had been higher not long before this and the algae reflected the earlier levels. It did make it look quite spectacular!
• On this stretch of the S. Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon, Colorado, there is bright green algae growing on the rocks above the waterline, making the scene extremely colorful. Hope you all had a wonderful weekend. We certainly had a great time camping at 30 Mile near Creede, CO. Some of those pics will certainly find their way to the dailies in future days, as I get them processed. This pic is from our camping trip at Eleven Mile Canyon several weeks ago. There is some very nice detail to be seen in the larger sizes.
• Along the S. Platte River in Eleven Mile Canyon, Colorado. I'm posting this early because I want to take my cold to bed. We camped in Eleven Mile Canyon and were awed at the beauty of the S. Platte River, which runs through the canyon. Thanks to everyone who commented on my image of a lady in a hat at the Denver Botanical Garden. Hope you have a nice day.
• I just finished processing the images from my first ever photo shoot with a young, aspiring model. Heather is a lovely young woman and I was very lucky to be able to do this photoshoot with her. This is one of my favorite images from the shoot. If you are interested in seeing the others, they are in the following gallery: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/gallery/8572425_qAADT#564825381_oE9Qd. I'd love to hear your suggestions and comments, as many of you have so much more experience than I do.
• A lovely alpaca. I'd been wanting to take pictures of alpacas and when I found out there was an alpaca extravaganza nearby, I hustled over to get some shots. This is one of those. Thanks for the nice comments on my pink poppy pic. There were some great shots on the dailies today. I get so many good ideas seeing what you all do. It is always an inspiration.

• A scene at the Denver Botanical Garden; view the detail in the larger sizes. I wanted something with lots of green for today and thought this might fit the bill.
Thanks for your comments on my rather erratic posts this week. Hope you enjoy your weekend!
• Jurassic Park - A scene at the Denver Botanical Garden; view the detail in the larger sizes. Thanks to all of you who liked and commented on my shot of the summer shower on the Front Range mountains. One of the really nice things about living in Colorado Springs is that, as you drive around town, you constantly have these spectacular views of Pike's Peak. And, they say about the weather in Colorado that if you don't like what you are getting now, wait five minutes. So, we do get to see lots of different kinds of weather crossing the mountains. Well, I'll stop my dissertation here and just wish everyone a lovely Sunday! The wedding shoot went well and I think I got some nice shots. I have about 1500 shots to wade through...it is going to take a while.
• The agave, or century plant, sends out this flowering stalk only once in its lifetime. It does take one of these plants a long time to grow, although it does not necessarily take 100 years. Once they flower, the plants die. This one was photographed at the Denver Botanical Garden. Detail is best viewed in the largest sizes. Thanks for the comments on the spider and fly pic. It was a pretty interesting thing to see. Have a good day!
• Please view the detail on this German bearded iris in the largest sizes.
• Hey, Mom, isn't this how YOU make soup? Last week I had my first ever photoshoot with a baby. Chyler is an adorable six-month-old girl and has to have one of the best dispositions ever. I shot pictures of her for over an hour and she never fussed at all, except when her mom was changing her outfit for the second time. This is one of the images from that shoot. If you are interested, the rest are here: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/gallery/8414425_vn5R3#P-1-12. Thanks for all the nice comments on my hubby's picture today. There were sure a lot of terrific shots on the dailies today. We are going to a breakfast and preview of a show of the work of Fernando Botero, a Mexican artist, at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. Botero sculpts and paints and is known for his characterizations of rather rotund people. We're looking forward to seeing the show. Have a great day, everyone!
• I thought about entering this photo of my husband, Phil, in the Dgrin Challenge, but ended up entering a different image. I admit to being surprised that my photo of the sculpture shot from the freeway elicited so many nice comments. Just to clarify, I was not driving the car, so I was merely shooting through the rolled down window. I'm not as skilled as a few of you are at driving and shooting at the same time. Hope everyone had a nice weekend. I spent some hours today cutting gambel oak around our house. We have to do this to make our house more likely to be able to be saved in case of wildfire. Hard work, but rather gratifying, since you can see the results of what you've done.
• At my granddaughter's annual ballet recital, this young dancer, a professional with the Colorado Ballet, partnered one of the students. No flash photography was allowed, so I snapped this image on a whim, not expecting to get anything worth bothering with. I was surprised that the picture was better than I expected and, after quite a bit of messing around with it, this is what I came up with.
• It's only money!
Thanks for your comments on my shot of the botanical garden for St. Patrick's day! Much appreciated.
Our closing on the house was yesterday morning! We are now officially HOMELESS! We're still trying to decide on a bigger RV and then we'll be off to somewhere! Our first trip will be to pick up an RV, so we'll go wherever it is located. I'll keep you all posted.
• Four members of the USAF Thunderbirds climb into the sky during the 2009 performance at the USAF Academy graduation; view the details in the largest sizes. This is one of the sharpest shots I got of the Thunderbirds and one of the reasons I chose it for my daily was that there were shadows cast by the plane ahead on each of the planes except for the leader. I thought that was interesting. Some of the other shots i took included ones of the planes flying near Pike's Peak. I took several hundred shots but have posted about 49 in a Thunderbirds Gallery (under Airplanes). If you are interested in seeing the other shots, click here: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/gallery/8365387_LvF9u#P-1-12.
Watching this graduation day performance is becoming a regular event for many residents of Colorado Springs. Actually attending the graduation is not the best place to watch the Thunderbirds. The Academy is located on one side of I-25 and a number of businesses are located on the other side. People drive to a spot on the east side of the freeway and park there to watch the performance. We've been doing this ever since we moved to the area...about five years. Since a new Hollywood Theater has gone in just across from the stadium, we've been going there. Last year there were quite a few people at the spot, but this year the entire parking lot, overflow lot and all the little feeder streets were completely filled with watchers. It has become quite a party. Some people set up little awning things under which they have a picnic. Some people grilled food. Most bring chairs and snacks. Some of us go into the theater and buy popcorn and other food. Most folks arrive several hours before the Thunderbirds arrive. The Thunderbirds always arrive several days before the graduation to practice. They practice a couple of times a day and many of us have them flying directly over our homes during the routine, so, even if we had not been keeping up with the date of the graduation, by the time the day arrives, virtually everyone is aware of it because of having seen the team practicing. It is a lot of fun. There were lots of folks taking photos, although at the Hollywood Theater location, I certainly had the biggest lens, which is a decided advantage.
Hope you like the shot and have a really nice Friday!
• Thanks so much for all the comments on yesterday's baby picture. I was really overwhelmed with your response to it. She really is the sweetest little girl and was so much fun to shoot. So, I'll beg you indulgence a bit with another shot of her. Thanks, again, everyone.

I too have loved this photo from the first time I saw it. It is the quintessential childhood photo. I agree with Terry and Donna both, I miss the old comraderie of the Dailys very much. I've been MIA on Flickr too only because I have no time or bandwidth to post and comment on both sites. I enjoy Flickr and hope to get back to it soon. It's a shame we have lost so many talented photographers from the Daily ( now non-existent) community.

I've always loved this image. I agree Terry. I've been MIA in the Flicker group, just not enough time.

Adorable! Looking back over past comments it is apparent how much our community has shrunk. And nothing else seems to have taken its place....the Flickr Daily Photo group is almost dead, too.
