For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

My granddaughter, Quinn, had her dance recital today and she really did us proud. Tomorrow my grandson, Duncan, has his piano recital. We're really looking forward to that. Still life with glass jars; best viewed in the largest sizes

Thanks to all those of you who offered suggestions about what to do for injured hummers. I'm going to keep them all and if I ever have another need like that, I'll make use of them. Thanks, also, for your warm response to my shot of the white roses. My granddaughter, Quinn, had her dance recital today and she really did us proud. Tomorrow my grandson, Duncan, has his piano recital. We're really looking forward to that. Hope everyone enjoys their Sunday!

  • 9/30/13 - a dragonfly has just emerged from its nymph stage and is drying its wings in the air; this is a shot from my archives, but I wanted to participate in pappamugger's dragonfly challenge, even though I have not seen a dragonfly in a long time. We had been at the Denver Botanic Gardens and my grandson spotted the dragonfly which had just emerged from its nymph stage. It just crawled onto his hand. Pappamugger said this is a green darner. Thanks for the indentification!<br /> <br /> Thanks for your comments on my L is for Light shot. I loved all the wonderful L images that you folks posted today. I'm looking forward to "M" and hoping I can come up with something a bit more creative.
  • Day 5 - a damselfly captured last summer at the Denver Botanical Gardens. I may not get to comment on your pics today, as I am off shortly to get an epidural cortisone shot in my spine; hopefully, this will relieve the sciatic nerve pain I've been having for four months now. Have a great day, everyone!
  • Day 2 - a bee drinks nectar from a flower; the detail of the bee and the pollen is best viewed in the largest sizes. I took this in my garden last summer, and, as I'm longing for summer, I decided to post this one today.
  • Day 1 -I believe this is the seed head of the castor bean plant.
  • Day 16 - Looks more like a fly to me, but I'm not sure what kind of insect this is on the gloriosa daisy. I'm off the the dreaded dentist but will be back later today to look at all of your wonderful dailies. I also hope to do some shooting at a pond near the college that is frequented by a lot of ducks and geese.

  • A view into the courtyard at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, taken a couple of months ago.<br /> <br /> I'm posting this early and it will most likely be my last post until we return from Yellowstone. We'll be camping and probably won't have access to wifi on the trip. I know I'll miss out on a ton of wonderful shots, but I will try to catch up when I get back.   • California Poppy; I liked the soft folds made by the petals of this poppy.<br /> <br /> Thanks to all of you for making my shot of the prairie falcon #1 for the day. Given the other photos on smugmug, I was amazed that that one received that kind of response. But, it certainly inspires me to keep trying to do my best.<br /> <br /> Hope your week got off to a good start and that your Tuesday is a good day, too.

I admit glass is one of my favorite things to shoot. It is just so interesting. Unfortunately, I did not get any commenting done yesterday because of my family obligations. My apologies to you all.   • Roses; best viewed in the largest sizes; I was actually quite pleased with the dof I managed to get in this shot.<br /> <br /> Thanks for your nice comments on my shot of the poppy. I had a sad experience today. Late this afternoon my grandson and I were out in the garden and I saw a hummingbird sitting on a tiny branch about one foot off the ground. It seemed so unusual I told Duncan to look. He did and he said, "What about the hummer on the ground." There was a tiny rubythroat lying beak down in some dead grass. He looked almost dead. He moved a little trying to extract himself, so I very carefully picked him up. He was lying flat, barely breathing. I held him on my hand for over an hour and he gradually improved: held his head up and moved it around, opened his beak and stuck out his tongue, swallowed a lot, flapped his wings, and stood a bit on my hand. All through this, his eyes were either shut or just barely open. After about an hour, I noticed him starting to tremble. I had tried to get him to eat some sugar water or sip from a petunia I brought to him, but he did not seem to realize what it was. I even put a little bit of it on the tip of my finger and held it to his beak, but he would not drink. I was afraid he was going into shock. I decided to put him in a box that was dark with a soft cloth in the bottom. I checked him several times and he was just sitting there with his eyes closed. After about another hour, I lifted the lid and, as I did, he fell over dead. I was so sad. We had tried to locate a hummingbird rescue person in the area but there don't seem to be any in Colorado Springs. I talked to a person from a rescue org in Ellicott and she said to just do what I was doing, but she wasn't optimistic unless we could get him to eat. I had a little dropper, but he wouldn't take anything from it either. I'm so sad that we were unable to help this beautiful little creature.

Thanks to those who took the time to look at my shot of the pasqueflower seedheads in a large size and comment. Can't believe it is Friday already. Where has the week gone?
  • Pasque flower seedheads; if you only look at one shot in 3x or larger the entire year, this needs to be that shot, since this looks like a totally different image in the largest sizes.<br /> <br /> I was amazed at all the great comments on my shot of the little house wren. Thanks so much. I'm really tired tonight and your comments sure made me feel better. Hope everyone enjoys their day. I have to go to the dentist and have a couple of fillings done. Yuk!
  • A house wren, sitting on a weeping birch; best viewed in the largest sizes. This little fellow and his mate are nesting in a wren house we've had hanging for the past six years. Until this year, we never had any bird nest in the house and we had never seen a wren in Colorado. His singing is wonderful!<br /> <br /> Thanks for the comments on my macro of the waterstrider.   • A water strider that we found in the dining room; best viewed in the largest sizes<br /> <br /> Wow! I was amazed and awed at the wonderful Memorial Day shots that so many of you took. Your inventiveness was inspiring and impressive! <br /> <br /> I was really surprised at the nice response to my shot of the drum. I liked it but didn't really expect to get much of a response, so it was a very nice surprise that so many of you seemed to like it. It is that kind of response that keeps me energized to keep doing my best. Thanks so much!<br /> <br /> Hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend.   • The Air Force Academy graduation was today. I took a lot of pictures but I set my shutter speed at 1600/sec. and it looks like most of the photos have too much noise to be much good. Also, it was quite windy, so the wind may have moved the tripod a bit. Anyway, since the Thunderbirds do pretty much the same show every year, I decided to use one of the shots I took last year.<br /> <br /> The answer to the riddle was "Better to light a candle than to curse the dark." <br /> <br /> Thanks for all your comments on my heavily processed shot of the glass vase. I think I like some of the other versions of the same shot better, but this one seemed interesting. So many wonderful shots on smugmug today and such great variety! I look forward each day to seeing what you all choose to feature. Enjoy your day!
  • Rather large vase in the shop at the Denver Botanic Garden.<br /> <br /> Art and Mcdonegal got the riddle right: "Fools rush in where angels fear to tread," but I have to admit I really liked Ed's version: "Fools rush in where wise men fail to take pictures." Here is one more to get you thinking:<br /> <br /> "To ignite a taper is preferable to obscenities and oaths directed toward a lack of it."<br /> <br /> The photoshoot went well and I hope to be able to share some of the pics later. Today is the Air Force Academy graduation and we're taking a picnic and going to a movie theater parking lot across from the stadium. I hope to get some good shots of the Thunderbirds' performance.
