Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

Thanks to everyone who commented on my shot of the white on white hoarfrost. So glad you don't mind the hoarfrost shots. It isn't often that Mother Nature provides such a miniature tour de force for me. Seems like winter brings out the best in many smugmug photographers. There have surely been a lot of outstanding images on the dailies lately. It is also interesting to see how everyone evolves and matures in their craft. I know I've improved my photography since joining the dailies, but so has almost everyone else. Really amazing how we feed off one another!

  • View from inside the Park Meadows Mall - I liked the strong lines angles and the reflections in this shot. What do you think?

Thanks for your comments on my "yet another" hoarfrost shot. You folks are the best! I have to go to Denver for my annual eye exam tomorrow, so I'm hoping to get a chance to shoot something there.
  • My belated Valentine's Day shot - I'd forgotten that I'd taken this shot and been saving it for Valentine's Day. Just like me to completely miss the event, although I was on a trip at the time. Anyway, I decided I wanted to post it anyway for all you lovers and lovees out there!

Gosh, you guys are the greatest! Thanks so much for your wonderful comments on my shot of the great blue heron. For those of you who might be thinking about a trip to Bosque del Apache, the season runs from November to about this time. When we were there a week ago, the birds were beginning to act like they do pre-migration. Last year we went in mid-March and there were very few birds there and no cranes or snow geese. So, if you go, you want to check their web site and even call the visitor center just before you go to make sure that large numbers of the birds are still there. The neatest thing about the refuge is that you get so MANY opportunities to capture shots of birds in the air. So, even if you aren't great at that, if you take enough pics, you will sure to get some good ones. It is nice to have a big lens, but if you have a 200mm lens, you would still get some very nice shots, I think. When we were there, they were having very nice weather but it was still very cold in the early mornings for sunrise. The last morning, after an hour and a half, I could no longer feel my fingers to press the shutter. My camera and lenses are metal and that metal gets really cold! I cannot imagine how cold it must be in December and January!
Thanks again for your warm response to my shot.

Have a great day!
  • Cocktail Tumblers - We went up to the mall today and walked around taking pictures. This was inside Crate and Barrel.

Thanks so much for your response to my shot of the water drops on the glass plate. I did add a lengthy explanation of how I set it up to the commentary on the photo, so if you are interested and did not see it yesterday, you can go back to that photo and read it. Hope it is helpful. Enjoy your day!

Thanks for stopping to comment on my shot of the clematis kaleidoscope. We celebrated my daughter's 42nd birthday today, as well as my grandson's sixteenth birthday. Seems not so long ago that I thought 42 was really old. How quickly the days and the years slip by us.
  • Backlit hoarfrost; best viewed in the largest sizes.
Thanks for all the comments and thumbs up on my shot taken at Pottery Barn. Agilitypics suggested that my shadowy sp might have had something to do with the security guard thinking I might be a terrorist. Perhaps, he's right. Ha! Not too many of us old grannies going in for that sort of thing! Very cold here. I can hardly wait for spring. Take care.
  • Hoarfrost, white on white; best viewed in the largest size. I hope you all are not getting too tired of hoarfrost pics, as I admit to being rather enamored with them.

Yesterday I got my shot ready to be posted and then, for some reason, failed to actually post it. I didn't discover this until late in the afternoon. Thanks to those of you who commented on it, though. I finally finished processing all my hoarfrost shots and all the water drop shots from the melting hoarfrost. I loaded them into my "Snowy Days" gallery and my "Water Drops" gallery.

Things are starting to settle back into the usual routine, even though it is a new year. Hope yours is off to a good start!

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the backlit leaves with hoarfrost on them. I've been working really hard trying to finish processing the shots I took at the Christmas performance of my daughter's ballet students. She needs them. Unfortunately, this has curtailed my other shooting a bit. And, we finally got our Christmas tree and other decorations taken down today and put away. Always a job I dread, since it isn't as much fun as getting the decorations out. Hope you all have a great day!
  • Quite a few of you asked to see the hats that we made in our annual New Year's Eve Hat Making Contest. These are all of them except my hubby's Sacajawea hat, in which less than the required effort was expended, and which was not included here. He, nonetheless, felt that his "hat" should be awarded the prize for "Most Historic" hat. Ha! The rules of the contest are that the basic structure of the hat must be of newspaper, but that may be completely covered with other materials, if desired. We award prizes in categories such as Best Use of Newspaper, Best Use of Duct Tape, Most Creative, Wackiest, Most Fashionable, Best Use of Embellishments, Best Engineered, etc. Obviously, some of us (who will not be named) had more trouble than others in sizing the hat properly. Duncan's hat, second from the left on the bottom, actually had an object which spun when turned on. We've been doing this for many years and some members of the family (not me, obviously) have honed our skills to a fine degree. We have about two hours in which to create our hats. Hope you get a chuckle out of our efforts.

Thanks for your comments on my shot of the dancer. Much appreciated.

Hope you are enjoying your weekend!
  • This young lady is a ballet student of my daughter's. In the Christmas program of excerpts from the "Nutcracker," she performed a version of the Chinese dance.

I will put up some pics of our New Year's Eve hats, but we are still doing karaoke right now. I'll process them tomorrow and put one up tomorrow night. Thanks for all your comments on my shot of the hoarfrost on the leaves. Hope your New Year's celebration was a lot of fun!
  • Melted Hoarfrost on Pine Needles - really MUST be viewed in the largest sizes.

Your comments on my shot of the two drops were very encouraging. Thank you all. I must say that winter seems to bring out the best in many smugmuggers. Such an outstanding bunch of images today! Really made my day browsing through them.

I got a couple of books on CS5 today and figured out what I was doing wrong. I'm a long time photoshop user but new to CS5. Once I solved a couple of problems, things went quite smoothly. I'm certain I'm going to like it. Glad to hear so many of you like it. Hope everyone's week got off to a good start.

Many thanks for the comments on my yesterday's welding shot. I have been struggling all day with my new CS5 photoshop. I haven't had time to learn to use the new features and many of the old features seem to work differently and I can't figure out how to make them work the way I want. Grrrrrrrr! I'm sure I'll get it figured out eventually, but in the meantime, it is a huge time waster and very frustrating!

Happy holidays to you all! May the beauty of the season remain with you throughout the year! I've so appreciated all your support and encouragement for the past several years in the dailies. I feel like I know many of you and am always excited to share your experiences, both in photography and otherwise. This is such a terrific community and it has expanded my horizons so much and provided abundant inspiration that has pushed me to improve my photography. It is wonderful to share a passion with others who feel the same. Thanks for a wonderful year on smugmug!

Thanks for all the comments on my hoarfrost shot. Cannot believe I had two number ones in a row! You guys are the best!
  • Hoarfrost on a branch; best viewed in the largest sizes. We had freezing fog all day today and it created the most incredible hoarfrost on everything.

Wow! I was totally amazed when I saw my lunar eclipse composite was the number one shot tonight. I had seen a lot of great shots of the eclipse before I posted it, including Phil Nix's excellent shot and an outstanding one of the eclipse over Newark, NJ's skyline. At any rate, I'm very grateful for your support and encouragement....a very nice Christmas present for me.

Thanks to those of you who commented or left thumbs up on my shot of the church. Very encouraging. Lots to do today, as we're having our family for a little New Year's Eve bash. We always have a contest to make hats out of newspaper and other stuff. They can be decorated with anything but the basic structure has to be of newspaper. Then, later, we're going to have a family poker night. Hope you have a safe and happy New Year's Eve!
  • A total eclipse of the full moon, which occurred began in Dec. 20, 2010 and finished on Dec. 21, 2010, the winter solstice. There have been many excellent shots of the lunar eclipse already posted on smugmug and quite a few terrific composites. Mine is certainly no better than those, but I'm going to post mine anyway. A case of "I photographed it", so "I'll post it," I guess. Since I stayed up so late last night photographing the eclipse, I'm going to post a bit early and go to bed.

Thanks, as always for your support and comments. Only a few more days until Christmas. I hope everyone is nearly finished with their preparations. I'm getting there, too.

Oh, I forgot to tell everyone what the last two kaleidoscopes were created from. The first was part of a closeup of a motorcycle and the second was part of a shot of the glass house at the Denver Botanic Garden.
  • Another welder at work

Thanks for your comments on my other welding shot. Very much appreciated.
  • Welding - I had long wanted to get some shots of a welder or person doing grinding but did not know anyone who did this sort of work. A few weeks ago I called Sigma Metals here in Colorado Springs and asked if they would allow me to come and take some photos. They asked me to come out and see the operation first and then we scheduled a time for me to come and shoot. A few days ago I went there and took a number of photos. I've created a small gallery of the welding shots. There are also a few shots of a gentleman working at a grinder. Thanks to the folks at Sigma Metals who so graciously allowed me to photograph some of their folks.

Golly! You folks have really been generous to me this week. Three number one shots in a week! Mother Nature was very kind to me this past week and presented me with a number of nice photo ops in the form of the lunar eclipse, the hoarfrost and, then, the hoarfrost melting. So, thanks to her and to you all for the encouraging words and thumbs up.

We had Christmas dinner today at my daughter's house and tomorrow we're going to have a second Christmas dinner at my son-in-law's father's home. We're looking forward to seeing the rest of Tim's family. Hope your day is as nice!
  • Yet another kaleidoscope, just finished.

Thanks, as always, for your comments on my daily post, as well as comments on my other images. I've been watching the eclipse and taking some pics, which I hope to have up tomorrow.

Incredible coating of frost, which the back lighting really emphasizes. I wish hoarfrost were a more common occurrence in SE Michigan, but, alas ...
