1. Daily shots for the dailies forum on Dgrin

Dailies

These images are ones shot to post in the daily community on smugmug. I've been participating in this community for about twelve years. For the first few years, I tried to always post a shot taken either that day or the day before. Now, although I try to shoot everyday, I don't necessarily post the images on the same day they are shot.

Yucca in bud, photographed at the Desert Botanical Garden near Scottsdale, AZ. This one really MUST be viewed in the larger sizes.<br />

Thanks for your comments on the seedheads. I spent another day processing wedding shots and I'm not even 1/3 of the way through. I'll just keep plodding on.

  • Tulip with nepeta; please view this image in the largest sizes.<br />
<br />
Thanks for the nice comments on my shot of the poppies. Art and indigo correctly solved the riddle, which was "When the cat's away, the mice will play." <br />
<br />
Here is another to challenge those of you who like this sort of thing: Amorous disposition is bereft of optical function. Good luck!
  • Iceland poppies; some of the lovely flowers in bloom at the Denver Botanic Garden.<br />
<br />
Thanks for all the comments on my shot of the indigo blue flowers. Ed, blink, and Art all correctly identified the saying as "Beginner's luck." Here's one more to challenge yourself: "Immediately upon the absence of the domesticated carniverous feline, the common rodent proceeds to engage in a sportive fashion."<br />
<br />
Hope you all enjoy your Sunday!
  • I don't know the name of this flower of intense indigo blue. I photographed them at the Desert Botanic Garden near Scottsdale. They don't grow more than a foot high. If anyone knows the name, please let me know. Be sure to look at this one in the larger sizes, as the detail really pops. Judith Sparhawk has identified these as Desert Canterbury Bells (Phacelia Campanularia). thanks, Judith!<br />
<br />
No one solved yesterday's riddle, which was "All that glitters is not gold." Here is another: "Neophyte's serendipity."<br />
<br />
We visited the Denver Botanic Garden this afternoon and I think I'll have some nice shots when I get them processed. However, I am simply too tired right now to think about it and am going to bed. Hopefully, I'll get up at some point and post this photo. Enjoy your weekend!
  • Weeping birch in the spring. Best viewed in the largest sizes.<br />
<br />
Thanks so much for making my shot of the egret on the fence your #1 picture for the day. Really perked me up! Hope you have some fun on this Friday!<br />
<br />
The solution to the "riddle" was "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." Maryann, Art and Howard all got it right and Blick had a very good interpretation, "You can't win if you don't play. Here is another to challenge your gray matter: All articles that coruscate with resplendence are not truly aruiferous. Have fun!
  • An egret on a fence; best viewed in the largest sizes.<br />
<br />
Art and Joda answered the "riddle" correctly: Charity begins at home. Here is one more:<br />
"Abstention from any aleatory undertakings precludes a potential escalation of a lucrative nature."<br />
<br />
Hope your day is grand!
  • Closeup of feathers and pine cone; better viewed in the larger sizes.<br />
<br />
There were two correct answers to the saying represented by the following: Eschew the implement of correction and vitiate the scion OR "Spare the rod and spoil the child." Joda and either Patti or Dan got the correct answer.<br />
<br />
Here's another for those of you who enjoy these challenges: "Eleemosynary deeds have their incipience intramurally."<br />
<br />
Thanks for all the comments on my shot of the fountain at night. I finally finished processing the wedding pics today. Now I just have to upload them to smugmug and cut DVDs for the clients. Today is hump day and we are halfway to the weekend. Our weather this week is finally more springlike and I've taken a chance and planted some annuals in pots outside. So far, so good.
  • A fountain in Tlaquepaque shopping center in Sedona; best viewed in the larger sizes; This isn't that great a shot, but I was proud of the fact that it is fairly sharp, even though I handheld the camera at 1/15 second shutter speed.<br />
<br />
You smugmuggers are so smart. Many of you correctly identified the saying as "Look before you leap." Here is another one for you to test your mental quickness: Eschew the implement of correction and vitiate the scion.<br />
<br />
Thanks for all the nice comments on my shot of the smoky controlled fire and firefighters. We had been driving through the Arizona countryside and we could see the smoke from miles and miles away. Imagine my excitement when we finally came up right alongside it. I'm usually not that lucky. Hope your week is going well so far.
  • What ARE them thar thangs? Best viewed in the larger sizes.<br />
<br />
Thanks to those of you who commented on my sunset shot. We finally had a fairly nice spring day, although we also had a thunderstorm and about thirty minutes of hail. Tomorrow is supposed to be even nicer. Hope you enjoy your Sunday!
  • Teasel seedheads; best viewed in the largest sizes.<br />
<br />
Thanks for the comments on my shot of the cardinal. Wow, such a lot of wonderful shots on smugmug yesterday. Hope your Friday is great!
  • A male cardinal; best viewed in the largest sizes
  • A huge eucalyptus tree at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Globe, Arizona; I really like the effect in the largest sizes of looking at the view beyond through the V in the trunk. I sort of reminds me of some of the old Renaissance paintings I've seen, for some unknown reason.<br />
<br />
Thanks for your comments on my shot of the man sleeping and his cat. This stomach flu thing is wierd. It keeps coming back, after we think we are better. Yuk! Anyway, I hope you can enjoy your Wednesday. We had quite a storm tonight, snow, hail, lots of lighting, sleet and some rain. Tomorrow we're supposed to get more snow.
  • As we were walking into the Heard Museum in Phoenix, there on the lawn asleep was this man with his cat. I could not get into the best position for a shot without possibly waking him. It seemed so odd. At first, I thought he might be homeless, but it is also possible that it was just someone who lived nearby who wanted to take a bit of a nap on the museum lawn.<br />
<br />
I appreciated all the comments on my shot of the California poppies. Yes, opium does come from poppies but not from California poppies. It comes from the red ones that look similar to oriental poppies and that are grown widely in the middle east, as well as elsewhere. Hope you are enjoying your week. We are supposed to get snow tomorrow or Wednesday. Spring just can't seem to take hold here.
  • California poppies; this image needs to be viewed in the larger sizes<br />
<br />
Thanks to everyone who commented on my black and white shot of the yucca. I'm feeling much better, but still a bit rocky. Lots of wonderful pics on smugmug today. Hope everyone's week gets off to a good start.
  • A yucca in bloom; best viewed in the largest sizes<br />
<br />
Sorry I did not get too many comments in today. I have been sicker than I remember ever being. I had a short-lived stomach bug. I did not even post yesterday. Happy Mother's Day to all you moms!

Thanks for your comments on the seedheads. I spent another day processing wedding shots and I'm not even 1/3 of the way through. I'll just keep plodding on.
  • Seedheads - these are actually quite small. The shot was taken with a macro lens.<br />
<br />
Thanks for the comments on the female great blue heron. Hope your day brings joy!
  • Memory of Innisfree - I created this image for the last Dgrin megachallenge, which I was honored to get to participate in. The original shot was of the waterwheel and shed like building. I then added the water and, finally, added the brush and hand, which was cut out of another shot. Then I gave the image some treatments that I thought made it look more like a painting. I'd forgotten about the image when I came across it today and decided I'd like for you all to see it.<br />
<br />
Thanks for the comments on my little macro shot of the branch and place where the pine cone had fallen off. Hope your week has started off well and that it continues to go well.
  • I took this, thinking I might enter it into the Dgrin macro challenge, but ended up using something else. I liked the textures and detail in this shot of what was left behind when a pinecone fell off the branch.<br />
<br />
Thanks for the comments on my shot of Canyon de Chelly. If you haven't seen it, it is certainly well worth the time. Hope your week gets off to a good start. We had snow again today, although it melted really quickly. Spring just cannot seem to take hold.
  • One view in Canyon de Chelly in Arizona; best viewed in the largest sizes. The day in early March that we visited Canyon de Chelly was bitterly cold, windy and, later in the afternoon, snowy. In spite of that, the Canyon was gorgeous and still looked inviting. <br />
<br />
Golly, I'm really humbled that you all selected my shot of the great blue herons as your number 1 shot of the day. Especially on a day when there were so many of your shots that were clearly a step above the usual quality. I really appreciate the votes of confidence in my shot.<br />
<br />
Well, we finished our garage sale and carted off the leftovers to Goodwill. It is good to have it over and done with and we did get rid of lots of stuff and even made a bit of money. Garage sales are quite tiring, though, so I'm lookin g forward to a whole day tomorrow to work on taking and processing photos. Hope you have a really nice Sunday!
