Because oil and water don't mix and oil repells water, most of the birds that live near the ocean have feathers that quickly repel water. However, the anhinga is a bird that dives into the water and swims underwater for fairly long periods of time. Therefore, its feathers lose some of their oil and don't repel the water as well. They must, then, sit in the sun and spread their wings so their feathers can dry off after they have been swimming.

on Nov 13Love this. Your processing, if not exactly disguising the intervening vegetation between you and the anhinga, renders is less distracting, so we concentrate on the dramatic pose of the bird. Excellent job.
